Uncover the Secrets of Zagreb's Hidden Gem

Journey Through Time: Empire, Communism, Capitalism, and Earthquake-Damaged Grandeur at Zagreb's Medaković-Rošić Palace.

Embark on an unforgettable journey through the Palace's closed doors. This extraordinary tour is the only way to gain access to this architectural gem, hidden from public view due to ongoing government interference. Witness its most guarded secrets, a sight few have witnessed, and learn about the Palace's tumultuous history.

Since the independence of Croatia, the government has impeded the restoration of this cultural jewel and repeatedly allowed illegal actions to occur. In 1997, the government confiscated part of the building, preventing its rightful owners, the Rošić family, from gaining full control. In 2012, a further scandal erupted when the government allowed illegal construction of two additional floors atop the Palace. These illegal and hazardous acts, along with numerous instances of destruction, have severely impacted the preservation and appearance of this national treasure, as well as the Rošić family's ownership rights and ability to protect the Palace from further destruction. Even after the devastating 2020 earthquake, the government's harmful behavior has continued, putting extreme pressure on the Rošić family and jeopardizing the preservation of both the Palace and the Zbirka Rošić.

A Palace Awaiting Renewal: The Rošić Family's Legacy and the Zbirka Rošić

The Medaković-Rošić Palace, a testament to Zagreb's architectural heritage, stands as a symbol of resilience amidst adversity. Built in 1885, the palace has endured earthquakes and political upheavals, reflecting the city's own tumultuous history.

Acquired by the Rošić family in 1939, the palace became more than just a home; it housed the Zbirka Rošić, a cultural legacy collection considered one of the most valuable in Croatia and the surrounding region. Dr. Milivoj Rošić, a visionary, risked his safety to curate this collection during the perils of communism, amassing over 300 church sculptures that would have otherwise been lost or destroyed. This act of defiance and dedication to preserving cultural heritage is a testament to his courage and passion.

The 2020 earthquakes severely damaged the palace, endangering both its architectural splendor and the priceless Zbirka Rošić. Despite the challenges, the Rošić family remains steadfast in their commitment to restore the palace to its former glory. A comprehensive restoration project, meticulously crafted over 3.5 years, is still under government scrutiny, having passed all kinds of numerous checkpoints. While the collection is not accessible during this time, its significance underscores the importance of the palace's restoration for Zagreb's cultural landscape.
